As the name suggests, this is the opposite of blurring. Sharpening an image makes the edges clearer and the details stand out. However, if you over sharpen an image the result can look very unnatural, so apply this tecnique with care. In addition to a basic sharpening tool, most good image processing programs also provide a tool called Unsharp Mask, which gives you more control over the final results.

In Photoshop there tools are on the Filters>Sharpen menu. In the GIMP both of these tools are on the Filters>Enhance menu.
