Unit Descriptor
Web Design Fundamentals (Unit Descriptor: F181 11)
From the unit intro:
This Unit is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the main technical and design considerations in developing websites. The Unit also develops practical skills in the creation of web pages and graphics for use on the World Wide Web.
This Unit is aimed at candidates who have an interest in using graphics in webpage design. While the Unit is suitable for candidates who have no prior experience of web design, it would be of benefit to candidates to have some experience of using computer application software and familiarity with managing computer files.
Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main technical and design considerations in designing a website.
- Produce and optimise graphics for the World Wide Web to a given brief.
- Create a webpage for use on a web-server using basic HTML features to a given brief.
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main technical and design considerations in designing a website.
Performance Criteria
- The main purposes of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) tags are accurately described.
- The role of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in relation to web standards is accurately described.
- The key copyright considerations related to web-based content are correctly identified.
- The main file formats used in contemporary web-based media elements are correctly identified.
- The principal accessibility and usability issues which must be considered when designing a website are accurately described.
- The basic principles of design are accurately described.
Evidence Requirements
The evidence for this Outcome should be obtained under controlled, closed-book, supervised conditions and should last no longer than 45 minutes.
- One description of the role of the W3C
- Five HTML tags
- Three copyright considerations
- Three file formats from the common file formats used in the following areas: web pages, graphics, sound, animation, video and interactive media. Each file format should be from a different area.
- One accessibility issue
- Two usability issues
- Four design principles
Outcome 2
Produce and optimise graphics for the World Wide Web to a given brief.
Performance Criteria
- The digital images are correctly captured using digital cameras and scanners.
- The digital images are correctly created and include text, colour and simple shapes.
- The digital images are correctly optimised for the World Wide Web.
Evidence Requirements
- Each candidate will produce three digital images which must include:
- One image captured using a scanner
- One photographic image captured using a digital camera
- Text
- Colour
- Simple Shapes
Text, colour and simple shapes need not be present in each of the three images produced but must be evident across the three images. The evidence for Outcome 2 will be produced under open-book conditions.
Outcome 3
Create a webpage for use on a web-server using basic HTML features to a given brief.
Performance Criteria
- The webpage is accurately created using the basic HTML features.
- The webpage is correctly checked against the requirements.
- The webpage is correctly uploaded to a web-server.
- The webpage is verified as operational.
Evidence Requirements
To demonstrate achievement of Outcome 3 candidates must provide the following evidence:
- Produce a webpage which incorporates all the basic HTML features as required.
- Written recorded evidence detailing that the candidate has checked the webpage against the list of requirements within the brief.
- Performance evidence which demonstrates that the candidate has uploaded a webpage to a web-server (either a web-server on an internal network, or a web-server accessible on the internet) and verified the page as operational.
